Dear Charolotte,
May 16 will soon be here. I’m sure you and the other regional and local performers, participating in this year’s StoryFest, are busy preparing for a big show on that date. I hope to, once again, be in the front row, laughing and learning from each performance.
The headliner, Donald Davis, has long been one of my favorites. When I taught writing courses at Guilford Technical Community College, I would show a video featuring him. In it, he told about his maiden aunt, a “floater” who stayed with one family member, then another. My students always laughed loudly, enjoying his skillful rendition. Even more important, they benefited from his ability to entice with language.
How lucky we are to draw these professional storytellers to our city. For four years, StoryFest has brought Greensboro a springtime program that entertains and teaches. Though the telling of stories, we learn about ourselves and others. We do discover differences, but at the core of storytelling is discovering how much we are alike.
I also look forward to your performance. What funny hat will you wear? Will you again be playing the scrub board? I certainly hope so. Last year, when I interviewed you for the column I write for Greensboro’s News & Record, I took such delight in entering the world of Charlotte Webspinner for a brief while.
My wish: May this be a banner year for Greensboro’s StoryFest. May we gather as a community to laugh, clap, cheer, and go “Ah” as memorable stories are told on May 16. May those who can, generously support StoryFest, so this free tradition of sharing and entertaining can continue to bless our community.
Sincerely,
Sandra Redding, Writer/Teacher
